Polaris Sound File Editing Electives
The Polaris Podcast elective teaches students how to create and edit sound files on a computer.  We use computer microphones and headphones which are available for a reasonably low cost at any Radio Shack or Big Box store.   We edit the files using "open source" (i.e. free) computer software called Audacity.  Audacity is available for download to your Windows PC or Macintosh by visiting this page:  http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/

In order to learn and practice sound editing and storytelling skills, students were provided several sound clips from contemporary pop songs.  I asked them to weave these sound clips into a journalistic story in which they themselves are a character and the sound clips are rendered as a  responding "character".  The exercise is modeled after Dickie Goodman's "Mr. Jaws", which I loved at their age (and still do!).

Depending on your web browser and system settings, the following student projects will either play automatically, or will download to your computer for manual playback.   Please feel free to contact with me with any questions – I teach this class because I've always loved working with sound, and I get a lot of enjoyment out of sharing it with others.

Tunefully Yours,

Mr.  B
